Term 4 Swimming

Children can start bringing their togs and towels on
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

Welcome to Term 4,
After such a wet and stormy couple of weeks we are back at school and ready for the warm sunny weather to begin.
Thank you for supporting our Art Exhibition.  We had a lot of positive feedback and the children thoroughly enjoyed the process of creating art to exhibit.
Special welcome to Allee Overmyer, a student teacher from the U.S.A. who is joining our team this term and will be based in Room 17.
Remember that school begins at 8.55am.  Please ensure your child is there at least 5-10  minutes before this so they can prepare for the day and chat with their friends.

Supporting your child in a BIG way.
If you want to give you child extra learning support for Term 4.  Here are our suggestions and the order that children learn.

Maths
(Children need to know the following instantly)
Basic addition facts up to ten.
Basic addition facts up to twenty.
Basic subtraction facts up to ten.
Basic subtraction facts up to twenty.

Learning about fractions and equal sharing - this is great fun when you are cooking or sharing between siblings.

Learning to measure things.  First choose a type of measure ie. footsteps,  Estimate and then measure.

Talk about, shapes, sort them into groups and give reasons for your decisions.

When you ask your child
“What did you do at school today?”
Do they answer
“I played with my friends or I ate my lunch”.

Try asking another type of question…

What did you learn in reading today?

What important things did you learn from this?
How did you learn this?
What was your goal in …………...?
What did you need help with?
What really made you think?
What did you find easy?  Why was it easy?
Explain how you could improve this?
What did you find difficult?
Why did you choose these as your next learning goals?
What other things would you like to learn about?

Spelling
Spelling words will come home each week
Say the word
Sound the word
Spell the word aloud
Cover the word
Write the word without looking
Check the word

***repeat for next word
If you get it wrong write it five times and try again.
Reading
Read a wide range of texts from home, school, second hand shops, libraries.
Read fiction and non-fiction.
Read to your child so that they can listen and see you reading.
Share the reading of a book.
IMPORTANT
Ask your child to retell the text in their own words.
Encourage your child to retell in sequence.
Ask questions that need to be answered with information from the book.
If unsure, encourage them to find the answer in the book.
Ask questions that involve them giving personal opinions, e.g. Why do you think…..     How do you know …….
What would you do if this happened to you?
Ball skills - throwing and catching.
Keeping fit - Practise coordination by skipping.
TeReo -    Te huarere (The weather)
Climbing, balancing, hitting balls, jumping and landing.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES 5.9.16

1. Please check your child's hair for headlice - treat if required.

2. Please read notice below re school closes 1.00pm Friday 9.9.16

5th September 2016

 Dear Parents and Caregivers,

NZEI & PPTA PAID UNION MEETINGS 2016  Friday 9/9. SCHOOL CLOSES 1.00PM

The Government has announced a proposal to dramatically change the way schools are funded. Principals and Boards of Trustees would have to make tradeoffs between teaching staff and other costs schools face.

Primary and Secondary Teachers are very worried that the global budget would lead to:
 ● fewer teachers and larger class sizes
 ● less job security for teachers
 ● lower quality teaching
 ● fewer hours by redistributing funding for teacher aides and support staff
 ● more complex financial work for Boards of Trustees

The Government's current funding review is a onceinageneration opportunity to better fund education. NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA are the unions that represent more than 60,000 teachers and support staff from birth to year 13. They have asked all members to attend meetings in September to hear more about the proposal and help determine the education sector’s response.

We saw similar discussions five years ago which were quickly terminated after considerable concern by our community.

I encourage you to either collect your child at 12.30pm at the end of the morning learning block as the school will be closed.  However if you are unable to do this, and your child remains at school after 12.30pm, then an alternative programme will be provided by joining up the classes for the afternoon.
Please email us on admin@torbay.school.nz if your child will remain at school.

It is important for union members in our school to attend these meetings to have a say about how we get better funding, not bulk funding.

Thank you in advance for your support

Wendy Sandifer
 Principal

Please help us!

 Dear Parents

Our class is participating in the AIA Healthy Kids Challenge. It's a fun virtual adventure around the globe, led by rugby star Cory Jane and his special guests. We all create our own little avatars and each child will receive a free pedometer to count steps in the real world that will move our team around the online race track. As our steps move us to a new destination, we see a video of our class of avatars exploring with Cory and getting some healthy tips too.

We need your help too! We'd love you to get involved so you can support and encourage your child to get moving more often and help us get more entries into the draw to win one of 20 $1000 AIA sporting grants for our school and one of 50 Huawei tablets for our classrooms. Simply join the Parents Class Team and count your steps to help move your team around the same course as the kids. Race against other parents teams, get active with your child and have some fun along the way.

Welcome back to term2,
We hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable April holiday. Rangitoto Team have planned another interesting range of topics this term.
Classrooms are very busy places, if you are able to help in any way, please contact your child’s teacher.  Jobs may include putting away books, listening to reading, supporting writing, helping with other learning or sharpening pencils or cleaning the tables.  Perhaps you would prefer to do jobs at home.  Any help is appreciated!  If you are going to support learners and teachers in class, please send an email to the teacher so you can complete our Health and Safety training session. ☺

Brain Food - Keep bringing brain food, as most children need to eat regular snacks.  Reminder, brain food snacks must be small bite size pieces of pre-cut fruit and vegetables, nuts, dried fruit, plain unsalted popcorn.  Brain food needs to be in named small sealed containers or re-sealable plastic bags in the classroom before the 8.55am bell each morning.  If your child is bringing whole fruit and other food they will be asked to put it away until morning tea time.
Water - Water is very important.  Please ensure your child has a named water bottle.  If your child has a named water bottle in their bag and one in the classroom, that is fantastic but not essential.  It does help stop children entering classes during break times.
Homework – Thank you to those who support and share learning at home through our homework grid.  Many ask if we are short of time, what is most important.  The answer is reading, spelling and Maths basic facts.  Please ensure readers come back to school everyday as we need them for follow up tasks.  Please support your child to learn spelling words for tests on Friday and words from essential word lists in homework books.

Class sites
  • Check out class sites and blogs by clicking on www.torbay.school.nz  class sites and selecting your childs class.
Maths Matters - How can you help at home?

Think of ways to make Maths fun - you want your child to learn how pleasurable maths can be. Children are learning that Maths is everywhere within their environments.  They come across it in their everyday lives and often don’t make the connection to Maths. It's also important to show how we use Maths skills in our everyday lives and to involve your child in this.
Puzzles, games, and solving problems are a great way to start.  Identifying problems and solving them can also help your child develop maths skills. If you see him or her puzzling over something, talk about the problem and try to work out the solution together.
Don't shy away from maths if you didn’t like it at school. Try to find new ways to enjoy the subject with your child.

Here are some ideas to help support your child’s learning at home and during car journeys.

  • Point out the different shapes to be found around your home.  Encourage children to find and describe them.  Play I spy.  I spy a shape with four corners.
  • Take your child shopping and talk about the quantities of anything you buy.
  • Count objects (cutlery, books, toys, pegs, other objects around home).
  • Let your child handle money and work out how much things cost.
  • Look together for numbers on street signs and car registration plates.
  • Add the numbers together from number plates.
  • Pose problems and challenge your child to solve them.
  • Count forwards and backwards.  First to 10, then 20 and next 100.
  • Skip counting – support forwards and backwards counting in, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s to and from 100.
This will support times tables.
  • Skip count using the letter boxes on a walk – ask what the next number will be
  • Board games – counting on from a number and landing on a new square.  Ask your child to predict what number they will land on before counting.
  • Math quiz or scavenger hunt (find 12 round rocks and 4 white shells – How many things did you find altogether.)
Supporting your child with their reading
  • Read to your child.
  • Before you begin a new book, look at the front cover and predict what the story might be about.
  • Look at the pictures and talk about them and talk about the story.
  • Ask questions about the text.
  • Ask children to retell the text in their own words, encourage them to begin at the beginning, then retell the middle and end.
  • Read with your children – sharing the reading, taking turns especially if the text is tricky.
  • Read a serial chapter book - build excitement about reading by reading a chapter each day.
  • Listen to your child read to you, a sibling, pets or cuddly toys.
  • Visit the library – read a wide variety of  books and texts, including fiction and nonfiction.
  • Read and follow instructions.

This week I have given children Sumdog usernames and passwords. This is an on line site that I have used for Maths for several years. Year 2 children have a personal subscription. Yes there are games which are fun, but it is educational - it improves Maths knowledge, reading and basic fact speed. This is a great opportunity for your child. Please use it at home. If you are using an iphone or ipad please up load the sumdog app as it allows your child to access all the Maths games.

https://www.sumdog.com/

Have fun - but please only allow the Year 2 child to use this otherwise the questions will become too hard. We use it in the classroom too. Sumdog sends me daily reports on progress and areas of difficulty. Thanks :)
