Torbay Olympics 2016

Children represented one of six countries.  Their job was to represent that country to the best of their ability while showing Olympics values; friendship, respect and excellence along with the four  Paralympics values; determination, inspiration, equality and courage.

WE were all very excited!

We worked together determined to do our best!

Wow what a GREAT day at MOTAT exploring simple machines.

Even though the weather was somewhat moody!  We had a fantastic day - special thanks to our wonderful parent helps for supporting us!

GREAT START TO TERM 3 2016

EXCITED AND ON TASK!

Exciting topic planned for Term 3. SImple Machines - what are they and how could they help make a pirate's life easier onboard his ship?

During the holidays I visited a school on a small Fijian island.

I spent time in first year class of 32 6 year olds.
They were very excited to see photos of our school.

I asked the teacher if there was anything she would like for her classroom.  She said things to decorate the walls to make the room bright, fun and interesting for the children.  I have already sent some things over to brighten the room with a family from our team.

Most children have never left the island.  Parents come and go from the island on small boats.  They mostly work at the resorts on the neighbouring island.

I showed the children photos of our children learning to cross the road safely.

The teacher asked me to explain what a road was - I hesitated and explained that it is the ground on which the cars, trucks and buses drive on.
But then I realised most of these 6 year olds have never seen a car!

What is sound? How is it made and how do we hear it?

We experienced sound by experimenting with pitch, vibrations, and sound waves.  We learnt how we hear and about our outer, middle and inner ear.

We designed musical instruments.  We drew and labelled our
designs.  Wrote lists of what we needed to collect to make our
                                                           instruments.
We made and trialled our instruments and modified(made changes) until we got the sound we wanted.

Finally they were ready to play in our class orchestra.

Visiting the cute fluffy chicks

We visited the newly hatched chicks in Room 23.  The Year 4 children shared their experience with us.
Then we returned to class to brainstorm WOW words to include in our writing.
